I can't believe I got scooped on this latest Kinky Friedman news! I'd heard rumors of it when I was back in Texas over Christmas, but now I guess it's official...
Kinky Friedman, alt-est of alt country musicians, one of my favorite mystery writers, friend of both the Bushes and the Clintons and self-pronounced gypsy pirate, officially entered the race for Governor of the State of Texas.
He did it the way every Texas gubernatorial candidate should be required to...standing in front of the Alamo on a clear, crisp Texas morning, accompanied by Texas music.
After Billy Joe Shaver sang an accapella version of Son of Calvary, Kinky, Stetson hat on head and cigar in hand, stood up and announced on the Don Imus radio/msnbc show that he indeed was going to run in the 2006 Texas gubernatorial race. Then, Asleep At The Wheel played.
During the brief ceremony Kinky dashed off a string of one liners, made more sense than the Republicans and Democrats wished he had, and asked for a shot of Jamesons whiskey... all before 9 am.
Kind of makes you want to send money, doesn't it?
I don't have any word on an official Kinky Friedman for Governor website, but I'll post it here as soon as I do.
